City Plans to Axe Red Light Cameras to Free Up Officers

Camera companies have long touted their camera systems as tools to “free up officers” for more important duties. has disputed this claim from the beginning because cameras do NOT increase the number of police patrol hours (unless profits are used to pay for more hours or hire more staff). We have maintained that cameras REDUCE patrol hours because officers now spend hours and hours sitting in front of a computer rubber-stamping – er – reviewing citations rather than patrolling streets.

Now is reporting that police chief Pete Carey of Colorado Springs, CO wants the city to end its red light camera program in order to free up police for more important duties in addition to the fact that, “it did not meet safety expectations.” The truth is out.
