PIRG Releases New Report on Speed Cameras

PIRG, the federation of Public Interest Research Groups, released a report today about the spread of red light cameras across the country. The report doesn’t get into the safety debate regarding photo enforcement, but it does cover the political and contractual issues regarding photo enforcement, as well as a brief discussion the recommended approach for considering photo enforcement. The report exposes the industry’s practice of heavy and extensive lobbying and pushing contract terms that favor profits over safety and even goes so far as to penalize engineering improvements to increase safety at the expense of reducing violations. The report reinforces the views presented in this websites Alternatives page, which recommends engineering studies and alternatives before resorting to enforcement.
